Light therapy is gaining traction in many areas of health care, as research is proving it to be a very powerful and effective tool. But how does it work? And why should we care?

Red light therapy uses LED (Light Emitting Diode) technology to emit certain wavelengths of light to achieve therapeutic benefits. Research shows that the light actually gets absorbed by the cell’s mitochondria, causing increased ATP production. Simply put, the light gives our cells added energy to perform their very important jobs. For example, a fibroblast cell may be able to better produce collagen and elastin with light therapy exposure, leading to improved fine lines and wrinkles.

With consistent use, red light therapy provides improved healing time, increased circulation, improved texture and clarity, improved skin tone, decreased wrinkles, decreased inflammation and even pain relief. During use, blood flow is increased to the affected area, which helps to deliver nutrients and oxygen to the cells, aiding in the healing process. Other light waves are beneficial too. Blue LED light targets bacteria and can help individuals with acne, while infrared light goes deeper into the tissue for decreased inflammation and enhanced recovery times.

Red light therapy can be used as a stand-alone treatment or combined with other aesthetic and wellness services. Many dermatology offices, wellness centers and spas offer the service, so check your local listings to learn where you can receive treatment.

Not all red light devices are created equal, and some brands that are trusted and have passed vigorous testing to ensure safety and efficacy include Celluma, Platinum LED, Joovv, Lumebox, and Solawave. In addition to in-office treatment, many of these companies offer at-home devices for purchase. At-home devices can range in price from around $500 upward of $3,000, while in office-treatment is approximately $30 to $100 per session.

Overall, red light therapy is a safe, effective, non-invasive treatment option that can provide numerous benefits for aesthetic and medical applications. Whether you suffer from chronic pain, skin conditions, or simply wish to improve your overall well-being, red light therapy offers a safe and beneficial option for you to consider. As with any medical treatment, it is important to consult with your health care provider before beginning any new therapy. But with the right guidance and care, you can experience the many benefits of red light therapy for yourself.
